As a dog daycare and training business, we're passionate about providing a safe and healthy environment for all our furry friends. Unfortunately, some breeds are more prone to certain health issues due to their physical characteristics. Flat-faced dogs, such as Pugs, Bulldogs, and French Bulldogs, are particularly susceptible to breathing problems that can significantly impact their quality of life. πŸ’—πŸΆ

🐢 As the frosty mornings and chilly evenings settle in, it’s important to ensure your dog stays safe, comfortable, and healthy during the colder months. ❄️

At Dogs Unleashed, Merton, we understand how much your furry friends mean to you, so here are some essential winter care tips to help you and your pup enjoy the season together.

1. Bundle Up for Walks πŸ•

While some breeds are built for colder weather, others may need an extra layer to stay warm. Consider investing in a doggy coat or sweater, especially for short-haired or smaller breeds. Look for waterproof options to protect your pup during wet and snowy walks.

2. Protect Those Paws 🐾

Cold weather and icy surfaces can be tough on your dog’s paws. Salt and grit used on roads and sidewalks can also irritate their pads. After each walk, gently wipe their paws with a damp cloth to remove any debris, and consider using paw balm to keep their pads moisturized and crack-free. Booties are another great option for sensitive paws.

3. Adjust Their Diet πŸ¦΄πŸ…

Dogs may burn more calories in the winter to stay warm, especially if they’re active outdoors. Talk to your vet about whether you should slightly increase their food intake. On the flip side, if your dog is less active during the colder months, monitor their weight to avoid overfeeding.

4. Stay Visible πŸ‘οΈπŸ‘οΈ

Winter means shorter days and darker walks. Equip your dog with reflective gear, such as a reflective harness or leash, and consider using a light-up collar to ensure they’re visible during early morning or evening strolls. Safety first!

5. Grooming Matters 🐩

Regular grooming is essential during winter. Keep your dog’s coat clean and well-brushed to help their natural insulation do its job. Avoid shaving their coat too short during the colder months, and make sure to dry them thoroughly after wet walks to prevent chills.

6. Keep Them Active Indoors πŸ•πŸƒπŸΌ‍♂️

On particularly cold or icy days, you may need to limit outdoor time. Keep your dog mentally and physically stimulated indoors with interactive toys, treat puzzles, or a game of hide-and-seek. This is a great way to burn off energy and keep them happy.

7. Provide a Warm Sleeping Spot πŸ’€

Ensure your dog has a cozy place to sleep away from drafts or cold floors. A plush bed with blankets in a warm corner of your home will keep them comfortable through the winter nights.

8. Watch for Signs of Discomfort πŸ₯Ί

Keep an eye out for signs that your dog may be too cold, such as shivering, lifting their paws frequently, or trying to head back inside quickly.

πŸ’Œ Always trust your instincts and prioritize their comfort.

β˜ƒοΈ Winter can be a magical time for you and your dog, filled with crisp walks and snuggly evenings. ❄️

By following these tips, you’ll ensure your furry friend stays safe, healthy, and ready for all the adventures the season has to offer.
